(February 25, 2020) - Pro Team Shoes have been designed from the ground up in close partnership with fabric experts, carbon manufacturers, and professional cyclists. They have been tested over two years and more than 20,000km, in all climates and conditions.
Working with world-leading weaving technologists Avery Dennison, we created Powerweave, an entirely new jacquard woven fabric and in doing so set a new benchmark for cycling footwear.
The result is a shoe unlike anything on the market, with glove-like comfort, a stiff carbon sole, and race ready performance.
The Pro Team Shoe has been developed with input from professional riders in the EF-Education First Pro Cycling team, and features reduced volume over the top of the foot to promote a glove-like sensation on the foot. EF athlete Lachlan Morton said: “I’ve put about 12 days on them now, maybe 1,000km or so. I generally hate new shoes for a month but loved these straight out of the box. Having put so few kilometers on them, I’d normally never race in them but they were an instant favorite. Honestly no complaints which I’ve never had in any other shoe. “
Meanwhile, size and width are consistent with Rapha’s current Explore and Classic shoes. The Pro Team Shoe also brings a secure heel, snug mid-foot, and more toe box room than the earlier shoes. There is also adjustable arch support. Neilson Powless, EF Pro Cycling rider said: “I started using the Rapha shoes a week before starting Tour Down Under. After the first ride, I already knew I wanted them for the race. Comfort and stiffness are hard to balance, but Rapha has done it beautifully with these shoes.”
To find the perfect performance upper for a racing shoe, we experimented with dozens of fabric options before deciding to develop our own. With Powerweave, yarns and weave patterns can be precisely engineered to deliver strength where needed to provide a form-fitting and virtually seamless upper. The woven nature of the fabric produces incredible strength and durability, essential for a shoe upper. The flexibility of Powerweave allows the upper to hug the foot perfectly, for improved comfort and reduced friction, while being stronger and possessing less stretch than materials such as microfibre or knit, thus aiding power transfer.
Powerweave ensures lower moisture retention when riding in warm weather and a hydrophopic treatment promotes weather resistance on cold, wet days, helping keep feet dry and healthy. This makes the Pro Team Shoe suitable for year-round use.
The sole unit of the Pro Team Shoe has been developed alongside a world-leading carbon fibre supplier and features a trapezoidal cross-section inspired by box-girder bridges. The sole is designed to be incredibly stiff from toe to heel for extremely efficient power transfer, and features an external heel cup to ensure that riders’ heels stay firmly planted in the shoe. Putting the heel cup on the outside also allows for a sculpted fit with less weight.
