Press Release
(August 5, 2019 – Scotts Valley, CA) Giro Sport Design, the cycling world’s design leader, today announced the helmet for the next generation of mountain bike riders, the Tyrant MIPS. With full-cut coverage, MIPS Spherical, and two types of foam with differing densities, the TyrantTM MIPS® serves up style to match the progression of riders like Ratboy, Loosedog, and Vero Sandler as they blaze new trails outside the racing tape. The Giro TyrantTM MIPS® is available this fall from authorized Giro retailers and www.giro.com for $150 USD/ €149/ £150.
“Racers are still racing, but so much of the real energy in mountain biking is now out playing in the woods -- building the ultimate lines and sessioning the best parts,” said Giro Marketing Director Dain Zaffke. “Tyrant is made for riders who are more likely to be wearing jeans than a number, but are still pushing boundaries with their riding. We wanted to give them a helmet that matches their style but still delivers the latest evolution in protection.”
At the heart of Tyrant lies MIPS Spherical, the latest iteration of the multi-directional impact protection system proven to reduce energy transmitted to the brain in certain impacts. Like a ball-and-socket joint, two layers of foam rotate around each other below a hardshell with in-mold polycarbonate HardbodyTM lower wrap. One layer is EPS, which is well suited to dissipating energy from high-speed crashes. The other is a lower density EPP foam, with rebound characteristics designed to address low-speed, roll-around-in-the-dirt-type spills, like when a rider tumbles off a mis-timed footplant. The added coverage of a “full-cut” design brings confidence along with style, while StackTM ventilation at the brow line and 14 vents combine with internal channeling to keep riders keep their cool. A new version of the RocLoc Air DH retention system locks everything in place, while adjustable cheek pads customize the fit.
